the things your mind unconciously reveals.

husband and i had a mini vacation this weekend.
we went to paramus, new jersey.
hellllooooooo new jersey!
it was fabulous.
beyond fabulous.

along the way, my mind unconsciously revealed something to me.
it went a something like this...
we chose paramus because it's only an hour away, has an ikea, AND a chick fil a.
we got to the mall, and had our eyes set on chick fil a.
it was all we could do not to sprint to the counter.
as i was looking around, and noticing the lack of a line at chick fil a, i turned to husband and said,
"that's funny.  in america, the chick fil a line is the longest one in mall food courts.  but not here."

hmmmm.
in america????

it seems that my subconscious thinks we are living in a foreign country.
whoa.
i thought i was completely adjusted.  well, mostly.
but, my mental state says something completely different.

as husband and i talked further we found that the northeast could seem like another country.

everything is smaller, taller, and older.
you pay for parking everywhere.
it's cold.
the climate is very different.
did i mention it's cold?
we are far away from our families.
the roads are pretty bad due to the snow, ice, and plows.
people honk at you for no reason.
we don't have a washer and dryer in our apartment.
food is more expensive.
the people talk faster, and some are not as friendly.
everything is more expensive.
we've met people who think southerners are dumb.
politics are different.
main line denominations are dying, and teaching false gospels.
there are no chick fil a restaurants.
traffic is crazy.
it's impolite to not drink wine or beer at a party.
we are a metro ride away from one of the largest cities in the world.
there is a metro.
gas prices are much higher.

all that to say, i guess i am still getting used to the northeast.

pray for me.
to adjust to this foreign country.
to love the people we meet.
to be rooted and grounded in christ's love.
to enjoy the time the lord has us in the northeast.
to really invest ourselves in the community we are discovering.
to continue following jesus, even when it seems like we are living in a foreign place.
for the lord to prepare our hearts for the places and things he has in store for us next.

  1. I love you katie nash! And I know you'll be showing and seeing Gods love wherever you are!
and chick fil a always feels like home to me.
And I also definitely without a doubt would plan vacations around chick fil a and ikea.

  2. a couple other "other country" ideas worth mentioning...sonic is 1 hour away, good tortillas are hard to come by, I can't get COUNTRY or CHRISTIAN music on my radio, but most of all, WHERE are the SHOPPING centers and all the yummy CHAIN restaurants??? haha! let's hang out soon, Katie!
